The 42nd annual Lewes to Newhaven Raft Race will be the centre point of our regatta on July 9. As the tides reaches its highest point, up to 25 weird and wonderful craft will launch from the riverbank at Malling Rec, and the courageous crews will begin a seven mile marathon down to the sea at Newhaven. And they will paddle through a hail of flour bombs.
Each raft is sponsored for their own chosen charity, spreading the funds raised across a wide range of good causes. Crews spend weeks creating their designs – everything from cars to swans and rockets to magic roundabouts.
This year the race has the theme Britannia Rules the Waves, or to be more precise Britannia Rules Regatta – something for us all to celebrate whatever your views on Brexit. What will our raft crews create this year?
Lewes Round Table chairman Liam Jackson says: “Our race crews are always amazingly creative in their costumes and designs. Over the decades this raft race has earned a special place in the heart of our community. Generations of the same family have earned their spurs, or perhaps I should say oars, in this race. Around £500,000 has been raised for charities, and thousands of entrants have come of age paddling through the pain, and the flour!”
“Every year good people come back for more, and we already have a high number of crews interested in taking part this year. Anyone wanting to join in should contact me as soon as possible, details below.”
New for 2017 : Afters for Rafters Finish line celebrations at Huggers Green, Newhaven.
Liam (pictured), who is an architectural designer, is hoping to also recruit more members to the Table. He says:
“Table is the best young mens club in the world. We are a group of guys between 18-45 that meet up every couple of week’s typically on the Thursday evening for different activities.
“These range from poker nights to go-karting to curling, gliding to sailing and also international trips. We are quite open minded really and will give anything a go. We also have meetings to help us organise our main charity events.
“Round Table is an international community and Lewes Round Table is connected to tables in other countries. Each year we attend a meeting with our European friends . This years meeting is in Bodo in Norway .We also had quite a few international guests to our 85th charter in November 2016 which was a celebration of 85 years of Round Table in Lewes.”
Just come and speak to me or one of the other tablers. Pop along to a few events and then decide if you want to join us. Organising and running the events can be quite fun as well as raising money for worthy charities. No secret handshakes here although membership has been known to raise curry consumption quite dramatically.”
